Youth chess matters because it pushes kids to think ahead, plan strategy, and use real critical thinking to solve problems—not just move pieces. Parents can support by encouraging regular practice, celebrating effort and growth, and helping make sure every child has a place at the board.

Chess Club Objectives
Our class concludes with a deep dive into “smart moves” that help students spot winning chances. We explore ideas like x-raying the back rank mate, trapping a piece, and capturing or distracting a key guard. By the end of this phase, students are thinking several moves ahead and looking for creative ways to finish the game.

Smart Moves and Sneaky Plans
During this phase, we teach chess notation and algebraic notation the universal, FIDE-recognized standard for recording chess moves. It uses a coordinate system (letters for files/columns, numbers for ranks/rows) and single-letter abbreviations for pieces to create a short, visual log of a game
In this phase, we dive deep into chess tactics that stretch each student’s thinking and open the door to advanced moves. They’ll learn how to set traps, spot hidden threats, and use powerful combinations to challenge their opponent and set up a winning checkmate.

Tactics Including The Royal Checkmate, Rook & King Mate, and Discovered Attack
In our first week of chess club, we focus on the fundamentals—how each piece moves and the basic rules of play. We also introduce the three special words and special moves, along with a simple opening so students learn a strong way to start every game. By the end of the week, most students feel confident with the pieces and are ready to take on their first real chess challenge.
